Manchester City legend Colin Bell has hit out at the club’s supporters who have been aiming an offensive chant concerning the Munich air disaster at their arch-rivals Manchester United.

The disaster in question occurred on February 6, 1958, when many United players were killed in an air crash that claimed 23 lives and left a further 21 injured.

Recent reports point towards City officials having held meetings to discuss the course of action that needs to be taken after the offensive chant was heard again during the club’s victory over Blackburn Rovers.

Now the club’s former midfielder has called on the supporters to cut out the offensive chant, as he told the Manchester Evening News: “They are not true City supporters. Football is a sport at the end of the day and they are chanting about people’s lives.

“It’s gone on long enough and I appeal to them to stop. It’s sad and I think it is truly out of order.

“I played for City and now consider myself a supporter of the club and these chants are degrading the club. I don’t like it one little bit.”
