Two siblings burnt to death when a corrugated shack in the Lüderitz’s Area Seven residential area caught fire on Thursday night.
Police Commissioner Josephat Abel said the siblings were unable to escape the flames because the shack’s door was locked.
“A 20-year-old relative of the siblings was last seen at the shack and had apparently locked them inside while a paraffin lamp was alight before he left,” said Abel.
According to Abel, the siblings’ mother, an employee at Seaflower fishing company, was at work when fire had engulfed the corrugated shack.
“The siblings mother was admitted to the local State hospital for shock after news of the fire tragedy had reached her,” he added.
The siblings identified as Levi Panduleni Shitaleni, a nine-month-old baby boy, and Helena Uwanga Daniel (9) were burnt beyond recognition, said Abel.
Daniel was a grade two pupil at the Lüderitz Nautilus Primary School.
Abel said Police had opened an arson docket.
The Karas Police regional commander further reported that no other fatalities or accidents were reported during Easter long weekend roads in the region.
“Until yesterday no fatalities or accidents were reported,” said Abel.
