At least 17 people have been killed and dozens injured in clashes between Somali government forces and Al-Shabaab extremist militias in southern Somalia on Saturday.
The clashes erupted in Eelwaq and Luuq districts of Gedo region. “11 people from the warring sides dead and 20 were wounded in fighting in Busaar village about 40kms east of Eelwaq district in Gedo region,” a witness who spoke on condition of anonymity told Garowe Online.
Al-Shabaab spokesman Sheikh Abdulaziz Abu Muscab told the press in Mogadishu, the restive capital of Somalia that his militias killed dozens of local Ahlu Sunah forces.
Reports from Gedo region say five Al-Shabaab militants have been killed in the fighting and about 10 were wounded.
Meanwhile, clashes broke out in Luuq district in Gedo region between Ahlu Sunah forces and Al-Shabaab which left seven dead from the warring sides.
Al-Shabaab militias control much of south and central Somalia regions, including large parts of the capital. The militias are fighting with the week Somali transitional federal government backed by African Union troops.
