Steve McClaren has backed Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko to rediscover the kind of form that he displayed during his days at Wolfsburg.

The 25-year-old, who moved to Eastlands in the January transfer window in a deal believed to be in the region of £27 million, had endured a goal drought before scoring for the first time in the Premier League in the 1-0 victory over Blackburn Rovers on Monday.

Now the forward’s former boss has admitted his surprise at his early struggles to life in England, but says the Bosnian has the ability to prove his critics wrong.

“Edin scored nearly 30 goals every year in the Bundesliga, so to come here and struggle has come as a surprise,” McClaren said, according to the Daily Mail.

“It took him a year to adapt in Germany. The second year? He got 28 goals. The next was 25. He had to prove his ruthlessness, but did so.”
