Luanda — The second phase of the vaccination campaign against poliomyelitis, to be held from 28 to 30 April, all over the 18 Angolan provinces, will cover the neighbouring Namibia, Zambia, DR Congo and Congo Brazzaville.
This action is under the efforts to overcome the sickness all over the world, reason why these five African nations decided to join and carry out this campaign to cover a great number of children, as well as combating this virus in the region.
Angop learnt from a press note issued by the United Nations Children Fund (Unicef) that, at least 39 poliovirus cases were registered in this region until 15 April, 36 of them notified in DR Congo, two in Angola (Kuando Kubango province) and one in Congo Brazzaville.
The World Health Organisation (WHO), registered in the same period (15 April), 73 cases of poliovirus in nine African countries: Angola, Chad, Congo Brazzaville, Côte d’Ivoire, Gabon, Mali, Niger, Nigeria and DR Congo.
According to the document, African region has 68% of poliovirus cases notified all over the world.
