President Goodluck Jonathan has been advised to consider working with the best brains in other political parties when constituting his new cabinet in order to give a sense of belonging to all Nigerians. A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Harry Akande, gave the advice yesterday in Abuja while reacting to calls on Jonathan to compensate party stalwarts who worked for his election victory. Akande’s call came on the heels of similar call by the Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) tasking President Jonathan to constitute his cabinet on the basis of competence and integrity rather than resorting to party sentiments

The national leadership of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday dismissed media reports suggesting that the party is planning to sanction the trio of General Ibrahim Babangida, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, and General Aliyu Mohammed Gusau for anti-party activities.

The involvement of the trio in the botched ACN/CPC alliance talks had been mentioned as critical offence they committed against the party.

But PDP National Publicity Secretary Prof. Rufai Ahmed Alkali, who reacted on the development, said the last meeting of the National Working Committee (NWC) never discussed any plan to sanction anybody for anti-party activities contrary to media reports.

Alkali said PDP has procedures and appropriate channels for taking such actions in the event that the party found it necessary to look at the activities of its members before and during the general elections.

He however urged all party supporters nationwide to rally round the Acting National Chairman, Dr. Bello Haliru Mohammed and President Goodluck Jonathan to consolidate on the victory of the party in the ongoing general election.

He said: “Our attention has been drawn to rumours making the rounds in the media in the past few days of a decision of the NWC of our great party, the PDP to sanction General Ibrahim Babangida, Alhaji Aliyu Gusau and Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

“It may be recalled that they were several reports in the media which said that members of the party’s NWC planned to sanctions our former presidential candidates for anti party. We wish to state that at no time did the NWC at its meeting take any decision to sanction or punish the trio for anti party activities.

“The concern of the party at the moment is to win election at all levels and therefore will not be distracted from its main focus. In the event that the party finds it necessary to look at the activities of its members before and during the general elections, they are procedures and appropriate channels for taking such actions. We wish to therefore call on those working for our leaders and elders in the party to cross check media reports before going to the press.”
