Taswa Picks 2010 Sport Personality Nominees

The Tanzania Spots Writers Association (TASWA) will today announce nominees for the 2010 Sports personality of the year awards.

TASWA Secretary General Amir Mhando said on Tuesday that the proposed nominees were picked by their respective sports associations, in which, among them one will drive home a brand new car (Toyota GX 100) as a top prize for the winner.

The annual event, which recognizes and awards individuals who have made their mark on the sporting scene, will be held at the Movenpick Hotel in Dar es Salaam on May 6. Winners of all sports categories nominated for the awards will get 1m/-.

TASWA announced last week that they will give out a brand new Toyota GX 100 worth 13m/- to the sports personality of the year. The association believes such prize will provide a challenge to other sports men and women to always strive for excellence.

This will be the first time in history of TASWA, to award a car to winner of the event, which is held annually. Winner of the previous edition (2009) netballer Mwanaidi Hassan was awarded 1m/- in total.

At least 15 active sports associations have been nominated for the event in which, their respective winners will get the 1m/- each for both men and women categories. Majority of the 15 nominated sports disciplines features both men and women categories.

TASWA has also introduced four new awards, which includes Sports Hall of Fame which will go to a person who contributed immensely towards the development of sports in the country, an award for the best up coming sport personality, award to the best Tanzania athletes who is trading professional career outside the country as well as an award to a foreign athlete featuring in local sports scenes.

Serengeti Breweries Limited (SBL) has injected 800m/- to sponsor this year’s awards. SBL Public Relations, Media and Communication Manager Teddy Mapunda said apart from awarding a brand new car the winner will also get a full suite night free at the Movenpick Hotel.

She said that the decision to sponsor the event was meant to boost sport enthusiasm in the country as well as recognize the spirit of sports journalists in enlightening sports fans.

Previous winners of the award include Samson Ramadhan (2006, athletics), Martin Sule (2007, athletics), Mary Naali (2008, athletics), and Mwanaidi Hassan (2009, netball)
