Jermain Defoe revealed his pride at scoring his 100th Premier League and 100th Tottenham goal on Saturday.

Defoe’s strike from 25 yards was also Tottenham’s 1000th goal in the Premier League, and the England striker was quick to pay tribute to both the fans and his team-mates for the support they have shown him.

“It means a lot to score 100 goals, especially at a club like Spurs,” said Defoe.

“From day one, the fans have been fantastic to me and the lads, they’ve always just said ‘keep going’. I knew it was coming and when it went in, it was a great relief.

“It was one of those moments where you think, ‘Wow, it’s happened’. It was such a proud moment.

“Before the game, Azza Aaron Lennon said to me, ‘You’re on 99, see if you can do it today’, and when you’ve got people around you like that, it’s fantastic.”

Although it was a special moment for Defoe, he also noted his disappointment at not picking up three points in their 2-2 draw.

“It was disappointing not to get three points because every game is like a cup final at the moment,” he said. “We need the points.

“Last season it was tight and we managed to do it. We’ve got important games coming up and we’ll see what happens.”
