Manchester United are close to the signature of Arsenal target Raphael Varane, according to The Mirror.

The 18-year-old defender, who only recently signed a new contract with Lens, is reported by the paper to be close to finalising a deal over to Old Trafford for a fee of £3 million.

Arsene Wenger, famous for spotting and nurturing talent, may be surprised to miss out on the transfer capture of Varane.

Already an established member in the Lens and French youth team, 6ft 3in Varane would be a good signing for Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United side who have suffered numerous injuries to their defence this season.
