Nigeria held elections for state governors and assemblies on Tuesday, after a week of unrest over recent presidential elections left hundreds dead.
Newly elected president Goodluck Jonathan has ordered tight security. Curfews are in place around the country and soldiers are patrolling the streets.
But observers fear a low turnout.
The ruling People Democratic Party, which controls three-quarters of the 36 states, is expected to lose some of them. Defeated presidential candidate Muhammadi Buhari’s Congress for Progressive Change could make gains in the Muslim-majority north.
New voters’ cards have been issued with the use of fingerprinting and other safeguards.
But Kaduna and Baudi states will have to wait until Thursday to express their vote, due to post-presidential poll unrest there.
