Ghana midfielder Michael Essien could return to action by Saturday after an injury scare for the Chelsea player over the weekend.
Chelsea’s faint hopes of retaining the English title have been boosted by news that the injury sustained by Essien against West Ham United was confirmed as only a minor muscle pull in his left leg.
The Ghanaian is potentially available for Saturday’s derby against Tottenham Hotspur.
Essien had pulled up after landing awkwardly in the second half and appeared initially to grip his left knee.
That had prompted concern given the 28-year-old has missed significant parts of the past two seasons with cartilage and ligament problems in both knees.
Chelsea currently lie second in the Premier League table, six points behind Manchester United.
