Charles Mumo won the 5, 000m race in style as curtains fell on the General Service Unit inter-company athletics championship at Nyayo Stadium.
Mumo embarked on a late killer kick to clock 14:30.3 while his closest competitor Samwel Musau (K-coy) timed 14:40 for second. Josepk Komen was third clocking 14:44.
A lacklustre performance was witnessed in the 1,500m despite Kipngetich Kirui of S-coy running away with the top honours after clocking 3:44. Paul Melly of headquarters timed 3:46 for second while his teammate Francis Kagonzi came third in 3:56.
In the women’s category Phylis Kiptoo of G-Coy posted a time of 4:49.9 for her win. Kiptoo had earlier made a go at the 800m race where she finished third in a time of 2:20.6. In her winning race, Kiptoo was followed by teammate Veronica Kipkeu who timed 5:17.0 as Emmaculate Chepchumba finished third clocking 5:34.0.
Juliet Arono of headquarters won the 800m women’s race with a time of 2:2:16.3 as her namesake Juliet Awani of G-coy came in second in a time of 2:17.7. James Kigen of headquarters won the 10,000m men’s race in 29:26.0.
Taking advantage of the absence of the Unit’s top brass, that included Daniel Yego, Kigen stuck to the leading pack before breaking clear with five laps to go.
Yego of Training College stuck to Kigen’s shoulder but help him off and beat him on the homestretch with a powerful final kick. Kigen now prepares to battles seasoned athletes like Kenya Police’s Sammy Kitwara, Leonard Mucheru, Bernard Kipyego and Moses Masai during next months provincials championships.
