TARABA State Police Command yesterday assured that its men would provide security for the people at today’s governorship election.
Speaking on its readiness for the polls, the state Police Commissioner, Aliyu Musa, said voters should come out en-masse to vote for the candidates of their choice.
It was gathered that serving National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members had resolved to boycott the exercise following the killings of their colleagues in some parts of the state.
Some of the electorate, who spoke with The Guardian on condition of anonymity, identified inadequate security as a factor that led to the crises in many states after the presidential election last week.
“I must confess to you that there is no amount of persuasion that would pacify me and my family to come out and vote again because this state and the country as a whole is not safe”, he said.
“I believe you witnessed what happened here in Jalingo, our state capital, immediately the presidential election results were announced. It took security men over one hour before they came out. But thank God for everything”.
Speaking with journalists at the weekend in Jalingo, Musa disclosed that all relevant security measures to check lawlessness had been put in place.
He added that the suspects arrested over last week’s violence in the state would soon be arraigned in court.
Musa stated that the numerical strength of the police in the state was enough to ensure protection of lives and property during and after the elections.
He warned politicians and their teeming supporters to desist from acts capable of igniting uprising, stating that the “police were ever-ready to bring to book any person arrested or believed to be behind any disorderliness irrespective of his or her position in the society”.
