Manchester City’s Edin Dzeko: First league goal has helped us win ‘one of the most important games’

Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko was delighted that his first goal for the club inspired the team to one of the most important wins of the season against Blackburn Rovers.

The January signing had been under pressure having not found the net in the Premier League since his £27 million move from Wolfsburg, but he managed to score just three minutes after coming on as a second half substitute.

The goal was enough to seal a vital three points for Roberto Mancini’s side, as the made Tottenham pay for a weekend slip-up against West Brom which now leaves the Londoners trailing fourth-placed City by four points in the race for Champions League football.

He told Sky Sports: “Of course I am very happy that this goal helped my team to win the game because it is one of the most important games in the last month.

“Now we have to look to future and today I think it is a new beginning for me.”

Dzeko had been criticised in some quarters having not produced the performances expected of him since his move but the Bosnian international was phlegmatic in his response to criticism.

He added: “Yes I am always looking to get into scoring positions but sometimes it is difficult but I am not the first person who has not been the best in the last month but I am happy that I scored today and helped my team win.”

Dzeko became the second big money signing from January to score their first goal for their club after Fernando Torres scored his first goal for Chelsea on Saturday and Dzeko suggested he was pleased for his fellow professional Torres.

“Its football, I think Torres as well scored a lot of goals at Liverpool before changing clubs I am happy also for him because I know what the pressure is and today I scored as well and I know I will score more goals in the future.”
