Chinese Women Call for Hard Work to Attain MDGs

Fuzhou — A CHINESE women’s organisation has urged African countries to continue working hard to eradicate poverty and improve on the education sector to attain the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

Fujian Women’s Federation chairperson, Liu Qunying said African countries should eliminate poverty and improve the education sector by providing more facilities such as schools and training centres.

Ms Liu said poverty elimination and improved education facilities were some of the most important areas of developing a nation.

She said governments should provide more training centres, especially in rural areas, and improve on the employment rate to increase wealth creation opportunities for the people.

Ms Liu said health conditions should be improved by providing health facilities to ensure a healthy nation.

She said it was important to protect women’s health rights, reduce the mortality rate and eliminate sexual discrimination to promote social development.

“For the African countries to achieve the MDGs, we would like to suggest that poverty elimination and education are the most important areas of development.

“The various governments should provide information on funds to increase the employment rate and by doing so the MDGs will be achieved,” she said.

Ms Liu said the implementation of gender equality programmes should be a basic policy to promote social development.

She said under the gender equality policy, women and men were equal in personality and dignity and that any form of gender prejudice or discrimination should be discouraged.

Ms Liu said women and men should enjoy equal rights and opportunities in all aspects of the economy, politics, society, culture and family life.
