Political killings: Fish out perpetrators, NANS urges FG

The National Association of Nigerian Students has urged the Federal Government to fish out the masterminds of the political killings which rocked some Northern states of the federation last week.

A fresh orgy of killings rocked the northern states shortly after President Goodluck Jonathan emerged the winner of the 2011 presidential race, beating his closest rival, the candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari.

NANS President, Mr Bassey Williams, and the Secretary General of the association, Mr Jossy Ekpe, in a communiqué, obtained by our correspondent, on Sunday, warned that the killings must not be swept under the carpet.

The communiqué by the student leaders said that NANS had tabled its demands on the crisis at a meeting with the Minister of Defence, Mr Adetokunbo Kayode, in Abuja.

Explaining that every Nigerian has the freedom of association, movement and speech, NANS said it was for wrong of some people to see Nigeria as belonging to them alone.

The association charged the Federal Government to ensure the protection of lives and property across the country during the governorship and state parliamentary elections scheduled for Tuesday.

NANS said, “The Federal Government must bring to book the masterminds of the killings of fellow Nigerians in some northern states last week, NANS said.

This will serve as deterrent to other people who might be planning such an attack on innocent Nigerians.”
