Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has warned his players against complacency ahead of their Champions League semi final first leg against Schalke.

Speaking ahead of their tie, Ferguson scoffed at suggestions that his team would be taking the German side lightly at all. Schalke have had a poor season domestically but have beaten Valencia and last season’s champions Inter Milan to get to the semi final which makes them a difficult proposition.

He told reporters: “Any semi-final you go into, you know it will be tough. It’s not easy for either side but we hope we can progress.

“If we can deal with Schalke, then we’ll look at it the prospect of playing Real Madrid or Barcelona in the final but you don’t care who you play in the final.”

Ferguson travelled to Germany to watch Schalke’s quarter final second leg against Inter where they were able to weather the storm to come away with a 2-1 win and Ferguson was impressed with the way they played.

He added: “Schalke never looked like losing against Inter. That’s quite a credit to them when you consider the experienced side they were up against.

“They were in control and made a good impression on me when I was here.”
