Jimmy Kamande has been relieved of his role as Kenya cricket team captain in the wake of Cricket Kenya’s moves to streamline the team after the poor World Cup performance.
“Cricket Kenya has taken the decision to stand down Kamande as part of the widespread changes we are making during our post World Cup review,” CK boss Tom Sears said yesterday.
Kamande was stripped off the captain’s tag seven months after taking over from Maurice Ouma who was also shown the door after the team’s poor performance at the ICC World Cricket League in the Netherlands.
When contacted, Kamande said he expected the development after the World Cup performances. He added that he got the news after a meeting with Sears on Wednesday where an desicion was reached.”I was relieved of my duties after the meeting. I was happy with the way the news was delivered to me. Under normal circumstances I would have heard of it through the media or through third parties but the CEO called me and he gave me the reasons for the decision,” Kamande said.
The development comes three days after CK parted ways with underperforming coach Eldine Baptiste.”It is important that when the coach and selectors begin their roles they have a blank sheet of paper to work from.
They will have an opportunity to assess all eligible players and identify those they feel have the ability, character and desire to be part of our future plans,” Sears added.”There is no way I could have continued to sit on the captain’s post and yet the people I was working with have also been relieved of their.
I think it’s a good decision CK have taken and I hope the best will come out of all this development,” Kamande added.
The captain’s position role will remain vacant until late June or early July before the team’s tour to Uganda for the inaugural Africa Cricket League.
