Following the fear being nursed by stakeholders about the forthcoming governorship election in Oyo State, the Chairman, Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, Dr. Felix Alaba-Job, has warned all candidates in the election not to see the contest as a do-or-die affair.

Job, who is the Catholic Archbishop of Ibadan Archdiocese, made the call a sermon delivered at the church’s Easter mass on Sunday in Ibadan.

He urged the governorship candidates not to make the contest a matter of life and death, saying they should “respect the freedom of individuals and desist from taking human lives or maiming people all because of the election.”

Among worshippers at the service were the Action Congress of Nigeria’s governorship candidate in the election, Senator Abiola Ajimobi; and his wife, Florence.

The Catholic priest called on the people to cast their vote for people with the fear of God as they go to the polls on Tuesday for the governorship and House of Assembly elections.

“Do not vote based on sentiment or money. Do not vote on ethnicity or religion. You should vote for people with the fear of God,” he said.

He also urged the Federal Government to intensify efforts on security all over the country, particularly in the identified volatile areas explaining that this was the only way to build confidence in the electorate and ensure total success of the on-going general elections.
