Nigeria’s Taye Taiwo says that Marseille can win the French league

Nigeria defender Taye Taiwo is under investigation by the French League (LFP) for using foul language after a match.

The Marseille player chanted an anti-Paris St Germain song containing an expletive after their League Cup final win on Saturday.

Taiwo scored Marseille’s goal in their 1-0 defeat of Montpellier at the Stade de France.

After the team were presented with the trophy, he took a microphone and sang, along with fans, a song aimed at arch-rivals PSG.

The LFP is now investigation the incident and Taiwo could be suspended if found guilty.

“The French Professional League has decided to open an investigation following Taye Taiwo’s behaviour after the League Cup final between Olympique Marseille and Montpellier,” the LFP said in a statement on Sunday.

“The League will hand the file to the (French federation’s) Ethics Committee,” the LFP added.

Asked what he thought of the incident on Saturday, Deschamps replied: “I did not hear it. It will give you something to write about.

“The less you write about it, the better it is.”

Taiwo scored two goals on Sunday as Marseille beat Grenoble 4-1 and moved one point ahead of Lyon with seven games to play.

“Marseille will be champions,” Taiwo said.

“We’re right up there and there’s no way we’re going to give up this position between now and the end of the season.

“There are some big matches left.”

Lyon still have matches at Bordeaux, Marseille and Toulouse, as well as a home game against Paris Saint-Germain.

Marseille, the only French club to have won the European Cup, won the last of its eight national titles in 1992.

Taiwo has been a key element in Didier Deschamps’ team this season and a ban would hamper the club’s chances of repeating the domestic double it achieved last season when it won the league title and the League Cup.
