Jordan Henderson insists Sunderland is eager to see out the season after a 4-2 victory against Wigan on Saturday ended a horrible run for the club.

The 20-year-old fired his first brace at senior level against the Lattics, ending a nine-match winless stretch for Steve Bruce’s side.

The midfielder exuded confidence after the match and believes the rest of his team-mates are equally as eager to see out the season positively.

“Today was a massive game for us,” he told the club’s official website.

“We showed a lot of character to come from 1-0 down to win 4-2.

“All the lads are looking forward to next week’s game already and hopefully we can kick on from here.”

Henderson scored his first of the match on 66 minutes, controlling on his chest before firing a half-volley left-footed into the top corner.

“I got the ball from Sulley and the touch managed to take it past the defender – luckily I was able to get my shot away,” he said.

“It was a great feeling to see the ball hit the back of the net, particularly in such a big game.”

His single became a brace 11 minutes later when he slotted home from inside the box.

“Sometimes the ones where you have time to think are the most difficult,” he remarked.

“I had time and I just tried to compose myself and slot it in.”

Henderson’s two strikes left Sunderland two goals to the good, securing an important three points to keep them well clear of the relegation zone.

But Henderson doesn’t plan on reveling in his performance for too long.

“We got the win today but next week’s game is just as big,” he warned.

“We have a big chance to finish the season well now.”

Defender Michael Turner was equally happy after Henderson’s goals sealed an elusive victory for Sunderland.

“I’m really pleased for Jordan,” he said. “He has played well since coming back into the team and came up with two good finishes today.

“The goals will do wonders for his confidence.”

Sunderland are in tenth place in the English Premier League on 41 points.
