McCarthy: Satisfied with point

Mick McCarthy admitted Wolves could have few complaints with a 1-1 draw against Fulham despite coming within a few minutes of winning.

Steven Fletcher’s early goal separated the sides for much of the afternoon at Molineux and it looked like Wolves would withstand mounting Fulham pressure to pick up a vital victory in the relegation battle

However, Andrew Johnson scored moments after coming on in the 80th minute, latching onto a loose ball after Christophe Berra failed to clear under pressure from Bobby Zamora.

McCarthy felt Wolves found it difficult to find much fluency throughout the match and accepted that Fulham deserved to come away with a share of the points.

“On the balance of play I can’t say that we dominated the game, but having got our noses in front we’ve got to learn to keep that clean sheet, which unfortunately we didn’t,” he told Sky Sports.

“It was a bit nervy, but hard working as ever and fully committed.

Henry praise

“It is difficult to play free-flowing football when you are bottom of the league and up against a good side, so I’ll take the point because every one is precious and it might be the point that keeps us in this league.”

Asked about Johnson’s equaliser, McCarthy added: “It’s a good finish and it dropped to the wrong bloke from our point of view, but I think we should have dealt with the first header.”

McCarthy also paid tribute to the performance of captain Karl Henry, who displayed all his usual battling qualities in midfield.

“He has been terrific and that is Karl. He leads from the front and is never lacking in effort and drive,” said McCarthy.

“He has had a great performance today and I’m delighted with him.”
