A DJ Campbell goal earned a 1-1 draw for Blackpool at home to Newcastle to move them out of the relegation zone, but they will be left wondering how they did not secure three points after battering their opponents for 90 minutes.

Campbell equalised a Peter Lovenkrands strike, which came from a Charlie Adam mistake, but despite dominating the rest of the match they were unable to find a deserved winner.

The Seasiders have conceded three goals in each of their last three home matches and decided to swap Craig Cathcart with Alex-John Baptiste in defence, whilst Matt Phillips and David Vaughan, who has missed the last two matches with a hip problem, came in for Luke Varney and Elliot Grandin.

Newcastle made one change from their 0-0 draw against Manchester United on Tuesday night, with Kevin Nolan replacing Danny Guthrie after serving a two-match suspension.

Blackpool have the worst home record in the Premier League, but they started positively against a Newcastle side who were seeking revenge for the 2-0 reverse at St James’ Park earlier this season.

Despite being on the back-foot, the away side had a great chance to take the lead from a quick counter-attack.

After goalkeeper Tim Krul had punched the ball clear, Newcastle broke and Peter Lovenkrands played the ball forward to Ameobi who was played onside by Baptiste.

The striker dodged a weak challenge from the centre-half, but when through on goal, he slipped whilst trying to square it to Lovenkrands who would have had a tap-in and Blackpool were able to clear.

The hosts had been boosted pre-match by the news that Charlie Adam had recovered from a foot injury, but he was at fault for the goal which gave Newcastle the lead.

Trying to swap passes with Stephen Crainey, Adam gave the ball away 30 yards away from goal to Joey Barton, who squared it to Lovenkrands.

The striker drilled it low into the bottom right-hand corner giving Matt Gilks no chance, meaning Blackpool had to once again come back from behind.

The home side continued to pressurise Newcastle and they had a chance to equalise soon after.

The Seasiders have had a lot of success from Adam’s set-pieces this season and a corner from the right, which was hit all along the floor, was missed by DJ Campbell, before being hit over by Phillips.

Phillips then played in Campbell through the middle, but goalkeeper Tim Krul quickly ran off his line and managed to push the ball away.

Krul was off his line a minute later to again deny Campbell and preserve his side’s lead.

Jose Enrique had played a shocking ball across his own penalty area, but Krul managed to nick the ball away from the on-rushing Campbell and referee Martin Atkinson correctly did not give a penalty, much to the disgust of Ian Holloway.

However, it was third-time lucky for Campbell, who deservedly equalised for his side, albeit in dubious circumstances.

A corner from the right delivered by Adam was deftly flicked with his left leg by Campbell towards goal only for Enrique to clear it off the line.

The goal was duly given by the linesman, with replays proving inconclusive as to whether the ball had crossed the line or not.

They had a third shout for a penalty when Danny Simpson slipped in the area and handled the ball, but Atkinson gave him the benefit of the doubt.

The home side began to assert real pressure on the visitors and Krul was becoming increasingly busy.

Another corner, this time from the left, eventually reached Baptiste, but his shot was cleared by Enrique this time before the ball had crossed the line.

And just before half-time, a storming run down the right by the pacy Phillips was matched with a lovely chipped ball to the back post where Campbell could only head into the side netting under pressure from Simpson.

The crowd roared thinking the ball had gone in, but they had to settle with a score at 1-1 going into half-time.

Blackpool continued to dominate after the break and they should have taken the lead, but Taylor-Fletcher flicked a header over the bar from six yards out after a brilliant cross from Crainey.

The hosts came even closer as Adam hit the foot of the post from the edge of the box after another flowing move cut through a Newcastle defence who had no answer to their movement.

Despite the constant pressure, the visitors held out to secure an important point.

This result means Newcastle are almost safe for another season, but Blackpool will see this as two points dropped as they fight to stay in the Premier League.
