Harry Redknapp has urged his Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy to spend big in the summer regardless of whether their finishing position qualifies them for next season’s Champions League.
Redknapp says the club must continue to invest in the squad if they have aspirations of playing in the Champions League every season.
“There shouldn’t be two transfer scenarios,” Redknapp told reporters.
“If you want to get into the Champions League again you have to keep improving.
“People say ‘If we get in the Champions League we’ll buy some great players’ but if you don’t buy some great players you won’t get in the Champions League. That’s how it works.”
If Tottenham were to miss out on qualification for next season’s Champions League Redknapp does not believe it will harm the club’s chances of attracting top players.
“People will come here anyway. They’ll see we were in the Champions League last year and want to get into it again.
“If you pay them the wages they’ll come.”
Redknapp also distanced himself from a move for previous transfer target and newly-crowned FWA Player of the Year, Scott Parker.
“We liked him but I don’t think we ever got close to signing him really.
“They were asking for £15 million and that’s a lot of money for his age, but we have got plenty of midfielders.”
