Jason Day has hit a lot of 3-woods this week at Harbour Town.

Where there’s a will, there’s a way to find the green, even if they are among the smallest on TOUR.

    That’s Jason Day’s game plan.

Day, making his first start since his fantastic run at the Masters, has sprayed shots left and right off the tee this week … and escaped nearly every time. He stayed in the fairway enough on Friday to shoot a bogey-free 65, so far the low round of the day, and move to 8 under and into a tie for the lead.

It hasn’t been easy. Harbour Town is noted for demanding a straight tee shot of 260-280 yards, and that is way off Day’s game. As one of the game’s longer hitters, he’s had to rely on his 3-wood, and he’s been spraying it.

“Obviously if you’re not hitting a 3 wood well, it makes it very, very tough,” Day said. “So it’s not so much changing the rhythm. Obviously, before this tournament you’ve got to practice a lot of 3 woods, a lot of 280-yard shots.”

Day has hit just 40 percent of his fairways through two rounds, but his iron play and putting has bailed him out. The ninth hole Friday was a good example: He blew his ball left and had to hit a provisional. He found his ball and managed to save par.
