The police will protect journalists while covering riots, Midwestern region police spokesperson, Ms Zurah Ganyana, has said.
While opening a four-day workshop on Anti-Corruption reporting in Hoima District on Wednesday, Ms Ganyana said: “Simply wear your press jackets and clear identification cards. Our personnel will find it easier to identify you and give you protection.”
She was responding to concerns raised by journalists who expressed fears over their safety while covering riots. Ms Guyana added: “We suggest that you move either behind or besides police so that we are able to keep a close eye on the demonstrators and you.”
Mr Geoffrey Tumwesige, a reporter with Bunyoro Television, said: “During the arrest of (Francis) Atugonza, I was hit with a stone. I do not know by whom. But up to now I feel back pain.”
The training was organised by the Uganda Media Development Foundation with support from Konrad Adenauer Stiftung .
