Freetown — Nasser Ayoub, businessman/musician/activist and philanthropist, has won this year’s Sierra Leone Excellence Awards (SLEA) for Best Philanthropist. Ayoub was named Sierra Leone’s Best Philanthropist for 2011, beating Adonis Abboud – Serbia’s honorary consul to Sierra Leone – in that category.
Mr. Abboud, founder and managing director of the local charity Pikin Bizness, has made a name for himself doing charity in Sierra Leone and beating him to this Award is a great feat achieved by Ayoub.
The Awards ceremony, hosted in Sierra Leone for the first time, was co-organized by Lamaj Group of Companies and the Sierra Leone Excellence Awards (SLEA). According to the organizers, the SLEA is aiming at honouring those individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to the development of Sierra Leone.
Receiving the award at Youyi building on the night, Ayoub said: “I want to thank the organizers and all of you that have supported me. This award is a stepping-stone for many good things to come. I am honoured”.
Other winners included Country Lodge as best hotel in Sierra Leone and Lady Felicia as best female artist.
Ayoub has established several businesses in Sierra Leone. He owns Free Radio 95.7 FM, Hotel Africanus, a foreign exchange bureau and a school, among others. He also does charity as part time and was recently inducted into the ranks of the All Works of Life (AWOL) because of his selfless service to the society.
Ayoub took upon himself to recently donate a 6.5kva generator to former Head of State Rtd. Capt. Valentine Strasser to enable him achieve his dream of setting up a resource center at Grafton, in the outskirts of the capital Freetown.
In February this year, Ayoub donated some 40 pairs of Puma footwear to the Methodist Boys’ High School (MBHS) in the east-end of Freetown and also co-financed the setting up of a website for the school. He sponsored a group of Spur Road youths to clean-up the community in support of the Freetown City Council’s operation “Pick Plastic”.
He has also supported various individuals’ and organizations’ development initiatives.
