At least 22 coaches drawn from the different service athletics teams and some new athletics clubs have successfully completed IAAF Level One coaching course held at the Independence Stadium from April 11 to 20, 2011.

The ten-day intensive training program, which was directed by IAAF lecturer Mr Shankah Edison from Sierra Leone, was organized by the Gambia National Olympic Committee in conjunction with the national athletics body with the assistance of Olympic Solidarity.

Speaking at the gathering, the president of the Gambia National Olympic Committee Alhaji Momodou Dibba said that the course was part of successive programs intended to develop different sectors of Gambian sport. Expressing hope and confidence that the participants will convey what they have learned to the kids in their various athletics teams, Dibba also praised the Olympic solidarity for its successive assistance to the national Olympic body.

The president added that he was very happy with the successful hosting of the course, adding that more other courses for different sporting disciplines will follow as part of GNOC’s policy to develop sport in the country. “We are very grateful to the Olympic solidarity for helping our coaches get such international level course and I hope this will make positive changes in our country’s athletics capacity” Dibba concluded.
