Coach Lamin Sarr is not throwing in the towel despite losing his first game against Cameroon. He is instead hopeful that his team will progress to the semi final.

Gambia bowed to Cameroon in GroupB’s second game on Monday in a poorly attended match in Johannesburg, Dobsonville stadium.

In a first-half that is virtually dominated by Cameroon, Gambia were left chasing shadows as the Young Lions preyed on Lamin Sarr’s fragile midfield. It wasn’t long when Cameroon’s Salli flickered in a long range free-kick from an incredible position, and thanks to a Gambian defense gaffe, the ball nestled into goalkeeper Musa Camara’s net as Gambia trailed a goal down a minute from break.

Despite the defeat, U-20 Coach Lamin Sarr is not counting himself out just yet, and believes his side still has its sight set on finishing big to grab a world cup qualification spot to Colombia.

In a short post-game interview with Caf, Lamin Sarr insists Gambia can still turn the cards.

“No no no… we were a better side though we lost. My team played well and if you see the statistics you will realise that we played better than Cameroon, [and] had more ball possession. Cameroun barely had a clear shot at our goal and if you see the goal, it is an own goal due to a defensive error” he said, adding ” I know the quality of players I have and we are not afraid of any team, we are stronger than them and all being equal we will win our two last matches and qualify for the semi finals.”

Gambia has a definitely pressing job to accomplish with Ghana who they will face tomorrow..
