Ancelotti: Believes Chelsea’s squad has not been good enough this season

Carlo Ancelotti does not believe Chelsea require a major summer overhaul, but acknowledged the squad this season has not been good enough.

Chelsea are in danger of finishing this campaign empty-handed on the back of last year’s Double success and Ancelotti’s job as manager is under threat.

There are also question marks regarding the futures of several senior players at Stamford Bridge, with new contracts yet to be tabled to certain members of the squad.

However, after splashing out £75million on David Luiz and Fernando Torres in January, Ancelotti is not predicting a summer of change.

Difficult

Ancelotti had previously brought in Ramires and Yossi Benayoun last summer, but five experienced figures from last season’s squad left Stamford Bridge.

With Chelsea trailing Manchester United by nine points in the title race, and having being knocked out of the UEFA Champions League by the Premier League leaders, Ancelotti’s lack of depth has been shown up.

The Italian feels injuries hit his squad at the wrong time of the season, commenting: “I don’t think the squad was good enough this year.

“At the start of the season, we couldn’t have envisaged having very important players out at the same time.

“We struggled to manage this – without Lampard, Drogba, Essien, Terry, Alex. It was very difficult.

“At a certain point in the season, we needed to put (Paulo) Ferreira in at centre-back because we’d lost all our other centre-backs.

“You cannot think at the beginning of the season that you would have all these players out. In the bad moments, it was difficult for us to move on without these players and I think it cost us quite a few points.”
