Mr. Woyome and one Augustus Kweku Eshun were named in a statement released on Tuesday, from the office of former President Rawlings, as persons using their previous acquaintance with the former President to misinform party delegates including spreading lies that Mr. Rawlings has a negative view about Nana Konadu’s presidential ambitions.
The Press Release from the office of the former President Rawlings was in direct response to a publication by a pro-NDC newspaper, The Ghanaian Lens, that Mr. Rawlings had distanced himself from Friends of Nana Konadu Aagyeman Rawlings (FONKAR) a pressure group fronting for and actively pushing for Mrs Rawlings to be the NDC’s flagbearer.
An earlier communication from Mr. Rawlings called on persons using his name to spew lies to party delegates to desist.
The Ghanaians Lens sought to interpret the former president’s words to be directed at the group FONKAR which has been campaigning for Nana Konadu, forcing the latest release mentioning the names of Mr. Woyome and others as the persons in question.
The statement called on Mr Alfred Woyome and Augustus Kweku Eshun to desist from dropping the name of President Rawlings as they go about misinforming the electorate about their political choices.
However, Mr. Woyome in a reaction on the Citi Eyewitness News on Tuesday said it is unfortunate for the office of former President Rawlings to accuse him of spewing lies, adding that nobody can prevent him from speaking his mind.
“I will continue to talk about President Rawlings so far as he remains as the chairman of the cadres, as far as he remains the chairman of the party and as far as he remains the former President who the tax payers pay. I respect him but I disagree with statements purported to have come from him that Nana Konadu should contest a sitting President, I disagree. And as I disagree, it is not in the interest of the state, it is not in the interest of the NDC and I will speak my mind anywhere because we all share in the same NDC”.
Mr Woyome also issued a stern warning to Mr. Kofi Adams, spokesperson of former President Rawlings to be careful not to destroy the name of the Rawlingses.
“I want to tell Kofi that he is a small boy and he is destroying a name that we all revere…Kofi what you are doing now, it would take some of us to stop you. I am not threatening Kofi I am warning him”.
Meanwhile, Mr Kofi Adams insists the former President will not countenance future abuse of the Rawlingses’ name.
“We don’t put out statements that have not been cross checked or have not been authorized to do so. The person he is talking about authorized the instruction that he doesn’t want his name or anybody to use any acquaintance in the past as he sought to indicate that he had acquaintance in the past and so that gives him the platform to go and talk to anybody using that previous acquaintance, that is what President Rawlings is asking them to stop”.
