DRTS FCT Director, Retired Major Adamu Arugungu gave the warning yesterday in Abuja, while reacting to a recent newspaper publication that alleged that VIO staffs were in the habit of extorting money from taxi drivers in the FCT.
He described the allegation as false and one sided, stating that the reporter never sought the directorate’s reaction.
According to him, although it is possible to have bad eggs in a place with over 1,000 staff, motorists with genuine as well as complete vehicle particulars have nothing to fear whenever they see VIO officials on patrol.
He said the payments for encoding drivers’ licenses and plate number are presently being done through a new IT system called e-vehicle registration (e-VREG) at the DRTS office in Mabushi.
Major Argungu called on motorists to report any fraudulent official of the directorate to the office since they all carry identification tags, adding that an office will soon be established in the DRTS office, where DRTS officials in partnership with the Federal Road Safety Commission will coordinate the speedy issuance of driver’s license.
