Having seen striker Kevin Doyle most likely be ruled out for the remainder of the season with a knee injury, Wolves manager Mick McCarthy has been dealt another setback with the news that winger Stephen Hunt faces time on the sidelines with several weeks due to a hernia problem.

The loss of another key player is a major problem for McCarthy, as he looks to keep his side in the Premier League for the second season in a row.

Currently, they sit nineteenth – one point off safety – having lost 4-1 at Newcastle last Saturday, but are buoyed by the knowledge that seventh placed Everton are the highest team in the league that they have to face in the run-in.

To cure his hernia complaint, Hunt will have an operation, but McCarthy is aware that if it is not successful, he may not play again this season.

He told reporters: “Hernias are sometimes two or three weeks now but we will see how he goes. If he recovers he will be available for the last few games.”

Hunt had only just recovered from a calf injury which he had picked up during his side’s 1-0 defeat against Stoke City in the FA Cup on January 30 and McCarthy added: “Hunty got fit but he couldn’t get back to full tilt, strength and energy because he was struggling.

“That was really shown in the reserve game on Monday.

“He’s just never got back to full tilt and he has to be at that to play.”
