Football Association chairman David Bernstein has told Sky Sports News that he wants Jack Wilshere and Andy Carroll to play for England’s Under 21s this summer.

The pair have both developed into integral members of Fabio Capello’s current senior team this season and most recently played in Tuesday’s draw with Ghana after excelling at club level.

But Arsenal midfielder Wilshere, 19, and Liverpool’s £35million former Newcastle striker, Carroll, who only turned 22 in January, are both still eligible to play for England’s U21 side.

England have high hopes of winning this summer’s U21 European Championship in Denmark and the FA is keen for the duo to play in Stuart Pearce’s team, despite the debate surrounding possible physical and psychological burnout.

Positive

When asked by Sky Sports News chief news reporter Bryan Swanson if Wilshere and Carroll will be involved at U21 level, Bernstein said on Thursday: “I hope they will be.

“They are two great players and it is a very important competition.

“I was very encouraged to see today in some of the media a much more positive view coming through about England and young players.

“There were some very interesting articles. I am sensing a change in view about the way things are for us at international level.”

It remains to be seen whether Arsenal and Liverpool will contest the use of Wilshere and Carroll, but Bernstein says he is currently unaware of any unrest.
