Effective tomorrow, Friday April 1, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) will arrest anyone who engages in street hawking as well as those who patronize the wares of a street hawker.

This is contained in some new by-laws approved by the assembly and the Local Government. Per the new laws, no one is allowed to sell any merchandise to a driver of a vehicle or a passenger whilst the vehicle is caught up in a traffic jam. A person shall not also buy from a street hawker unless the street has been designated for that purpose.

The Mayor of Accra, Mr Alfred Vanderpuije told Citi News that the Metropolitan authorities will strictly implement the by-laws.

He added that it is now considered an offense for anyone to litter the City anyhow. He said assisting someone to solicit for alms will also be an offense, and added that parents who allow their children of school going age to loiter or engage in delinquent activities will be arrested and charged.

Anyone found culpable of committing any of the above offenses will pay a fine or in default to a term of imprisonment not exceeding three months or be commuted to perform communal labour.

“From April 1, we will enforce this by-law such as the hawking activity in front of Flagstaff house, 37, Tetteh-Quarshie, Kawo Kudi, and Mallam Junction amongst others. All of these activities will be a thing of the past. We will hold drivers, passengers and hawkers responsible” the AMA Boss noted.

“If you board any vehicle transporting you within the metropolis, the driver and the passenger must not allow anybody on that vehicle to patronize any hawking product. Today people are selling kenkey and fish on the street as well as rice and stew at street lights and that is why we are having cholera to the highest level” he lamented.
