The National Security Advisor, General Joseph Nunoo-Mensah, has directed police in Tamale to arrest supporters of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), who are fomenting troubles in the region.
Following the discharge and acquittal of 15 persons standing trial for the murder of the overlord of Dagbon, Ya Na Yakubu Andani II by an Accra Fast Track High Court on Tuesday, some NDC supporters, who accused the government of letting them down and reneging on its promise to find the killers of the Ya-Na, went on rampage burning party property and office in Tamale.
The youth have also threatened to burn down all the NDC offices in the Region.
Gen. Nunoo-Mensah, told host of Joy FM’s Super Morning Show Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah that so far as he remained in his position, anyone who commits crime in the country would be dealt with.
“I will make sure any criminal is punished,” the National Security Advisor stressed.
“We are gradually becoming a lawless nation. People get up and do what they like because the police, the law is not working,” Gen. Nunoo-Mensah observed.
He said any person or group of persons who are dissatisfied with an incident – regardless of their party affiliation – cannot take the law into their own hands.
Gen. Nunoo-Mensah expressed concern that the police were increasingly becoming diffident and therefore failing to exact their authority to deal with undisciplined behaviour of so-called party youth and charged them to put their act together to maintain law and order as they were constitutionally mandated to do.
“My advice to the police is…they are there to deal with criminality, if people have committed a crime, you arrest them and deal with them. That is what I can tell them. No one is above the law.”
The police, especially in the region, have been accused of pandering to the whims of politicians and allowing impunity to fester but Gen. Nunoo-Mensah has asked them not to be “afraid” because they have his backing.
“I will support anybody (the police) even at the peril of my job, to do the right thing,” he assured.
“If because you are a member of the NDC or what and you think you can go on rampage and do whatever you like, that is not acceptable under the law, and the police are enjoined to deal with them,” he warned.
Interior Minister, Dr. Benjamin Kunbuor has described yesterday’s incident as “disturbing and unfortunate.”
He assured that the government was monitoring the situation “closely” to ensure that it does not get out of hand.
Meanwhile, as of Wednesday morning, spokesperson for the Northern Regional police command, Chief Inspector Ebenezer Tetteh, said no arrest had been made but said the situation is under control.
He will not say whether it is true the police fired warning shots in Tamale all night Tuesday till 2a.m. to disperse trouble causers, except to say the police used minimum force to maintain law and order.
