Danny Welbeck has admitted that he has a soft spot for Ghana but insists that he was always going to pledge his allegiance to England.

The young forward had the chance to represent the African nation as well, but instead chose to play for the Three Lions having represented them at various youth levels.

The Sunderland hitman, on a season-long loan from Manchester United, made his debut for the senior side during Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with Ghana at Wembley and was roundly booed by the away fans as he came on late in the second half.

“It was a bittersweet moment,” Welbeck said, according to Sky Sports.

“I’ve got love for both countries but I can’t play for both. It’s just meant to be. I can’t make everyone happy.

“I kind of understand that but I can’t make everyone happy. I’ve been playing for England at every single youth team level so it’s like a natural progression into the seniors and I’m obviously delighted with my progress.”

Welbeck’s team-mate at club level, Asamoah Gyan, maintained that the boos that met the youngster upon his arrival were tactical rather than vindictive.

“They the fans do love him but in football sometimes the fans try to frustrate you,” he said. “This morning the first text message I received was from Danny Welbeck because I tried to speak with him for about six months and I think he took his decision and I do respect the decision.”
