The Public Relations Officer for the Ministry of Women and Children’s Affairs, Mrs. Adiza Ofori-Adu has admitted that the slogan “What Men Can Do women can do better” was harsh on women.
Mrs. Ofori-Adu is therefore calling on men to help women so the nation can develop.
The empowerment of women received massive boast during the Fourth World Conference on Women (UN, 1995) in Beijing China, where the slogan “what men can do women can do better” was adopted.
Some me have criticized the slogan saying it is meant to encourage women to challenge men unnecessarily.
Speaking to Adom News after the Media lunch of this year’s International Women’s Fair scheduled to take place in Accra from the 6th to 8th of May, 2011, Mrs. Ofori- Adu said the slogan does not mean men should not help their women partners.
She disclosed that her ministry is now moving from that slogan and called for collaboration between men and women to help in national development.
“You know the gender issues are in stages, yes in the beginning the issues were hot, after Beijing there was so much energy and that was why such slogans were developed. But now we are calling for man-woman collaboration to help build the nation. Each plays a role,” she said.
The theme for the Fair is “The working Woman’s contribution to development”.
