Tottenham Hotspur defender Jonathan Woodgate has been ruled out of the upcoming Champions League game against Real Madrid.
Spurs travel to play the first leg of the quarter-finals of the European tournament at the Bernabeu on April 5, with the return leg scheduled to take place at White Hart Lane on April 13.
The 31-year-old had suffered a recurrence of a groin injury that had kept him out for 15 months, and was on course to make a recovery. But a friendly match against Barnet saw the centre-half fall prey to a calf problem that has ruled him out of the first meeting in Spain.
“It’s not good news – a real blow to him and the club,” boss Harry Redknapp told The Sun.
“He had been training well recently and I was hoping to feature him against Real next week.
“He’ll still travel with us as part of the squad. Real is his old club and this match means so much to him.”
