Jerusalem (CNN) — An Israeli airstrike in northern Gaza killed two men and wounded three others Sunday, Palestinian officials said.

The Israeli military confirmed the strike, saying its air force fired on a group of people preparing to “fire a rocket at the Israeli home front from the northern Gaza Strip, and thwarted the attempt by firing at them.”

A statement from the Islamic Jihad militant group said Israel bares full responsibility for the blood that was shed.

The dead and wounded were taken to Kamal Odwan hospital, Palestinian medics told CNN.

The Hamas interior ministry puts the toll for the last week at 14 dead and 50 injured. Hamas is the Palestinian faction in power in Gaza.

By CNN’s count, at least 12 Palestinians — eight militants and four civilians — have died since March 19 in Israeli retaliatory strikes.

CNN’s Shira Medding contributed to this report.
