Since the inception of the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation Programme (ITEC) in 1964, India has provided technical assistance worth more than US$ 2 billion to developing countries.

The country spends over $12 million annually on ITEC activities in the areas of training, study tours, as well as donation of equipment and aid for disaster relief.

Ruchi Ghanashyam, India’s High Commission to Ghana, disclosed this during a reception at her residence to mark the ITEC Day.

ITEC Day is celebrated every year to highlight India’s international friendship and south-south cooperation.

It also provides a platform for all ITEC alumni to come together and share their experience in India.

These interactions provide a useful feedback about the programme and help to make the courses more productive and result-oriented.

Madam Ghanashyam explained that since the inception of ITEC and its corollary Special Commonwealth Assistance for African Countries known as “SCAAP”, 158 developing countries have been invited to share in the Indian Development experience acquired over six decades of existence as a free nation.

She said “ITEC is unique because of its wide geographical coverage and the innovative forms of technical cooperation that it employs.

The ITEC programme has benefited thousands of students and professionals from Africa, including Ghana, who were trained in professional institutions in India.”

The day was also used to mark the International Students Day to commemorate the birthday of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, a stalwart of the Indian freedom struggle, eminent educationist and the first Union Minister of Education of the Republic of India.

To mark this event, the High Commission organised an Essay Competition on the theme, “Contribution of education to Nation Building.”

Prizes were presented to students who excelled in the competition.

The guest of honour, Betty Mould-Iddisu, thanked the India Government for its continuous collaboration with Ghana, especially in the area of Information Communications Technology (ICT).

“To the extent that the Indian Government practically demonstrates a willingness to share with others her development experience is enough to establish the fact that India is friend indeed,” she added.
