Aston Villa want to sign Tottenham star Kyle Walker on a permanent deal at the end of the season, Goal.com UK can reveal.
Villa manager Gerard Houllier is desperate to land the right-back in the summer after a series of highly impressive performances since he arrived at Villa Park on loan in January.
The Midlands club are ready to test Tottenham’s resolve by offering up to £10 million for the 20-year-old, who would be interested in the switch as he fears for his first-team opportunities at White Hart Lane next season.
Spurs are aware that Villa would like to turn Walker’s six-month loan into a permanent deal but manager Harry Redknapp is determined the former Sheffield United man will be in his squad next season.
Walker started the campaign behind Alan Hutton, Vedran Corluka and Younes Kaboul in the pecking order at Spurs and was allowed to join QPR on loan before stepping up to the Premier League at Villa.
He has progressed rapidly this season, with his performances on loan at QPR and then Villa earning him a place in the England squad for the upcoming internationals against Wales and Ghana.
Villa believe Spurs would consider selling Walker, who signed from Sheffield United in summer 2009 in an £8m double deal that also included Kyle Naughton.
But Spurs are adamant they have no intention of selling Walker, who Redknapp feels has the tools to become a regular in the England side.
“Kyle will be back here for sure, he’s still learning and got miles to learn but he is a talent, a real prospect,” Redknapp said last month.
“He has got all the attributes to be an England right-back of the future. He’ll come back here and push for a place.”
Walker has been a revelation for Villa, scoring two superb goals and making lung-busting runs that have drawn comparisons with Gareth Bale, who has shot to stardom at Spurs this season and is now one of the hottest properties in Europe.
Meanwhile, Leicester are also ready to open talks with Spurs with a view to making Kyle Naughton’s loan stint a permanent move.
The 22-year-old, who also plays at right-back, has been a consistent performer at the Championship club this season and Spurs are willing to let him leave in the summer.
