Windhoek — What was meant to be a mouth-watering double-header, featuring MTC Premiership title chasing Ramblers and FNB Orlando Pirates, at the Sam Nujoma Stadium turned to tra-gedy.
Thousands of football lovers were saddened not because of the outcome of results on the football pitch but what transpired off the field of play.
One of the most recognizable pioneers of Namibian football Laurentius Humphries collapsed and was pronounced dead on arrival at the Central Hospital in Windhoek.
As fate would dictate Humphries was keeping an eagle eye on proceedings off the pitch last Saturday.
Close sources confirmed to New Era Sport that the late Humphries was suffering from asthma and was complaining of severe chest pains on the day of the fatal incident.
Ramblers’ title hopes evaporated into thin air as the Tunchel Street Boys lost ground on table toppers Black Africa by going down 1-0 against the visiting LHU Blue Waters in the first of a double header on Saturday.
Pirates kept their title hopes alive as they were cruising to a 2-0 win over relegation haunted PC Blue Boys when the league’s new boys resolved to find a culprit in the match official whom they accused of being intoxicated midway through the second half.
The match was abandoned prematurely following the coastal outfit’s apparent refusal to continue playing while the accused match official remained in charge of proceedings – thus bringing the game of football into disrepute.
Meanwhile, the President of the Namibian Football Association (NFA), John Muinnjo, Executive Committee Members, Staff, Affiliates and the entire football fraternity expressed its heartfelt condolences to the family of the departed Laurentius Humphries.
The late Humphries was until his death the owner of Humphries Security Company, which provided security for all football matches over the past years.
“We wish his family, relatives and friends God’s strength during these difficult times. May his soul rest in peace,” read part of the statement.
