Ibrahim Salou has been released by Red Bulls New York

Ghanaian forward Salou Ibrahim has been released by Major League Soccer side New York Red Bulls.

The 31-year-old joined the Red Bulls last April from Denmark’s Vejle and scored three goals in 19 games.

His release will save the Red Bulls US$ 264,000 under the league’s US$ 2.65 million salary cap.

Salou received less and less playing time as the season progressed, especially after Thierry Henry signed with the club in July.

When he received a chance to play in the pre-season, he either under-performed or looking disinterested, almost knowing what his fate was going to be.

That probably was multiplied several times when Red Bulls coach Hans Backe said in the pre-season that Ibrahim and Thierry Henry could not play together.

The former Club Brugge player is reported to be planning a return to Europe after several clubs showed interest in him prior to his injury in 2010.

Ibrahim snubbed the chance to play for the Black Stars before the 2006 World Cup hoping he could get the opportunity to play for Belgium.

But the Europeans did not call him up and ignored by the Ghanaians after the rise of several important strikers like Asamoah Gyan and Prince Tagoe.
