The France international forward was on target on Saturday evening as the Blancos defeated Atletico Madrid in the Madrid derby 2-1 to remain five points behind Barcelona in second place in the Spanish Primera Division table.
Benzema also scored against his old club Lyon in the second leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie at the Bernabeu last week to help Madrid reach the quarter-finals of the competition for the first time in seven years.
Butragueno, a former striker himself with Madrid, has now prasied the 23-year-old and told the club’s official website: “Karim Benzema is having his best run since he arrived at the club.
“He isn’t just a goal scorer; he understands football, knows how to connect with his teammates, is very resourceful, knows how to play with his back to the goal, likes quick passes and also happens to score many strikes at the moment. He is being decisive.”
The 47-year-old also looked ahead to next month’s action in which Madrid will play their quarter-finals of the Champions League against Tottenham Hotspur, the Copa del Rey final against arch-rivals Barcelona and will also be involved in key league matches.
“April will be a critical month because three titles will be decided,” said Butragueno. “All our games will be extremely demanding.
“We will have to play difficult away fixtures in La Liga, and we’ll face Barcelona and Tottenham Hotspur in between. It will be a fascinating month, but we’ll play to the limit.”
