The Nigeria Football Federation has denied a renewed interest in Sunderland defender Nedum Onuoha as the Super Eagles prepare for a crucial game against Ethiopia on March 27.

Media reports had indicated that Samson Siasia was trying to get the Nigerian-born Onuoha, who has played for England at youth level, back in the Eagles fold.

However, the NFF has now denied the reports in a Monday afternoon news release which said that the team will not be distracted ahead of their latest match.

Siasia had tried to get Onuoha to play for his country of birth but so far has been unsuccessful. He has however secured the commitment of Newcastle United’s Shola Ameobi and promising young Wigan Athletic star Victor Moses.

Onuoha has featured regularly at the Stadium of Light since joining the Black Cats on loan from Manchester City at the start of the season.

It has been suggested the defender would be keen to remain with Sunderland after his loan expires, with opportunities to break into the first team at his parent club currently limited.
