Jonny Magallon was part of Mexico’s squad in South Africa but did not participate in any matches. Now that a new World Cup cycle is underway, he said he hopes to be able to compete for more playing time, even if he faces European-based players in the process.

Magallon joins Dutch duo Hector Moreno (AZ) and Francisco Javier Rodriguez (PSV) as well as Carlos Salcido (Fulham) in competition for starting spots ahead of Mexico’s friendlies against Paraguay and Venezuela.

“Those are players who are doing things very well outside of Mexico,” Magallon said in a press conference. “We know that is important in soccer.”

Magallon though said he does not feel out of place on a roster filled with European-based players. On the contrary, such a roster is an important one to be on.

“It’s always good and motivating to appear on the list and more so when it’s for games where the European players will be at,” he said. “It’s interesting, attractive, a new opportunity to succeed and I need to take advantage of it.”

As far as facing two South American nations in a span of four days, Magallon said that would do El Tri well.

“These are strong South American teams who are preparing and always fighting for a spot in the World Cup,” he said. “These are good teams to measure ourselves against in order to continue improving.”
