Glen Johnson claims the England squad have no problems with the controversial decision to reinstate John Terry as captain.
The Chelsea defender has regained the armband from boss Fabio Capello just over a year after he was removed from the role following allegations he had an affair with the former girlfriend of ex-team-mate Wayne Bridge.
Johnson believes the team will now get behind the returning skipper for Saturday’s Euro 2012 qualifier against Wales and friendly against Ghana three days later.
“I’m happy to play for England, regardless of who’s the captain,” he told Sky Sports News.
Decision
“Obviously Fabio’s made a decision and that’s Fabio’s decision so it’s above my head, really.”
Asked if the decision will be divisive, he added: “No, no I don’t think so.
“Obviously in the squad, everyone is professional and they go about the job in the right way so I’m sure they’ll be fine.”
The Liverpool player feels that Terry has proved to be an excellent leader for club and country in the past.
Fantastic
“Obviously John Terry has been a fantastic captain with Chelsea and with England and I’m sure he’ll carry on doing the same job,” he said.
Rio Ferdinand was handed the armband for the ill-fated World Cup only to get injured before the first game and it is the time he has spent on the sidelines which prompted Capello’s decision.
Asked if he felt any sympathy with Ferdinand, Johnson replied: “Obviously Rio will be upset to lose the armband.
“But it’s football and he’s a big man so I’m sure he’ll pick himself up and get on with it.”
