Aston Villa striker Darren Bent insists the squad are fully behind manager Gerard Houllier and can escape from the clutches of a relegation scrap.

The French coach has found himself under pressure from fans after results in recent weeks, with Saturday’s home defeat to Wolves leaving Villa sitting just one point above the relegation zone.

During the game, fans held up banners imploring the former Liverpool boss to leave the club and chanted for his departure.

But England international Bent, who was signed for a fee that could rise to £24 million by Houllier in January, says the Midlands outfit are fighting for their manager.

“We all believe in the manager and we’re still fighting for him,” the 27 year-old told reporters.

“There’s no reason why we can’t get out of it.”

Villa next face Everton away after the international break.
