“Okudjeto Ablakwa is only speaking good English but there is no justification for and no substance in his remarks about Nana Addo’s proposed vision,” he said on Good Morning Ghana show on Metro TV.
Following Nana Addo’s proposed vision to transform the Ghanaian economy in 10 years if voted into power, Mr. Okudzeto Ablakwa came out strongly to say that Nana’s plan is a ‘cut and paste’ copy of the Brazilian development plan.
He also noted that the NPP should be thinking of a home-grown development plan, which is what the World Bank says they are ready to support, instead of “this usual rush to go pick foreign models which do not fit into our circumstance”.
But Nana Akomea said Okudzeto Ablakwa rushed to condemn the proposed 10-year economic transformation plan even before it is published for him and his party to see the details of it. “This is a guy who has made up his mind and he does not want to be bothered with the details so he is condemning the plan even before the plan comes out,” he said.
Nana Akomea said previous governments’ attempted industrializing Ghana but failed, so the current generation of political parties in the country should take stock and find what was done wrongly so they could correct them. “The NDC should rather wait for the proposed 10-year plan to come out and find out what they can learn from it, instead of rushing to rubbish it,” he said.
According to him, the NDC has no vision, and if they are humble enough to learn from Nana Addo’s plan it would help them provide jobs for the youth and prevent the rampant lawlessness from unemployed NDC foot soldiers.
However, Mr. Okudzeto Ablakwa insisted that the NPP’s proposed development plan is nothing more than a ‘cut and paste’ version of the Brazilian development plan, which cannot fit into the Ghanaian situation because there are marked differences between Ghana and Brazil.
“Ghana and and Brazil have demographical and environmental differences – and moreover the Brazilian miracle did not begin 10 years ago, it begun in 1974 and took them more than 10 years to achieve what they have today,” he said.
Mr. Okudzeto Ablakwa said Nana Addo’s proposal is untenable because he and the NPP had eight years under President John Agyekum Kufuor and they left the economy in a state they themselves now describe as a Guggisberg (colonial) Economy. “Clearly the NPP have admitted to their failure and they are now turning around to give us some foreign model and claim we do not have vision,” he said.
